Sources & methods

Every prayer time in Sukoon is calculated on your phone with adhan-js (MIT licence), an open-source astronomical library. The same code renders the pages on our server. Each page states the method, the Asr rule and the coordinates it used.

Calculation methods

Fajr and Isha are when the sun is a set angle below the horizon. Institutions use different angles:

Defaults by country

We start with what most people there already follow, show it on every page, and you can change it at any time.

  • Pakistan: Karachi, Hanafi Asr
  • India: Karachi, Hanafi Asr
  • Bangladesh: Karachi, Hanafi Asr
  • United Kingdom: MWL, standard Asr
  • United States: ISNA, standard Asr
  • Canada: ISNA, standard Asr
  • Saudi Arabia: Umm al-Qura, standard Asr
  • United Arab Emirates: Dubai, standard Asr
  • Qatar: Qatar, standard Asr
  • Kuwait: Kuwait, standard Asr
  • Egypt: Egyptian, standard Asr
  • Turkey: Turkey, standard Asr
  • Malaysia: Singapore, standard Asr
  • Iran: Tehran, standard Asr

Asr

Hanafi Asr begins when an object’s shadow is twice its length (plus its noon shadow); the standard (Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanbali) time when it equals its length. Both are established positions; we present them neutrally. Hanafi is the default in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

High latitudes

Above about 48° latitude (the UK, for example) twilight can last all night in summer, so Fajr and Isha need a rule. Automatic uses one-seventh of the night there and the middle of the night elsewhere; you can also choose the twilight-angle rule.

Why is my mosque’s time different?

  • Mosque timetables often add 2–5 minutes as a precaution (ihtiyat).
  • Some follow a different method or Asr opinion.
  • Congregation (jamaat) times are set after the prayer time begins.

In Settings, add or subtract minutes per prayer to match your mosque. We never claim a mosque is wrong.

Sehri and Imsak

Sehri ends at Fajr. Many printed calendars end it a few minutes earlier as a precaution; you can choose that in Settings, and we always label it. An Imsak line (Fajr − 10 minutes) is optional.

Hijri dates and moon sighting

Hijri dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar, shifted by a country’s moon-sighting announcement (Pakistan’s Ruet-e-Hilal Committee) once we record it. Until then they are marked “expected”, never shown as certain.

Accuracy check

Before launch we compare our output for Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, London, Birmingham, Toronto, New York, Dubai and Riyadh against published timetables on 12 dates each, to within ±1 minute, and publish the table here. Status: not yet done.

Our principles

  • We don’t use worship to drive engagement: no streaks, no leaderboards, no “You missed Fajr!”.
  • We deliberately keep no prayer log: that is between a person and Allah, and logging invites anxiety and showing off.
  • No ads, no data sold, nothing sacred behind a paywall.

Who runs Sukoon

Sukoon is made by DanixSoft, an independent software studio in Lahore, Pakistan. Contact: hello@danixsoft.com

How it is checked and kept up to date

  • Prayer times are not a stored list: they are calculated fresh on your phone every time, with the methods above.
  • Hijri dates: Pakistan’s offset is recorded after each Ruet-e-Hilal announcement, about once a month; until then the date stays “expected”.
  • Quran text: every surah’s SHA-256 is checked against the Tanzil snapshot before each release.
  • Cities: built from GeoNames; the current list is from 25 October 2026.

Corrections

If a time, date or text looks wrong, write to hello@danixsoft.com with the city and the date. We check it against the sources above and fix it.

What Sukoon is not

Sukoon is not an official source and is not affiliated with any government, mosque or the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. Official moon-sighting announcements and your own mosque’s timetable take precedence. It does not give religious rulings.
