About Ashura
Many Muslims fast on Ashura, often together with the day before or after it. Practice differs between schools of thought.
Ashura is also the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala (10 Muharram 61 AH, 680 CE), in which Husain ibn Ali, the Prophet’s grandson, was martyred. Shia Muslims mark it with mourning gatherings and processions, and it is remembered across Pakistan.
